Humility refers to a dispositional quality of an individual characterized by a self-view that something greater than oneself exists, an accurate view of one’s contributions and abilities, the appreciation of the contribution and value of others, and a commitment to learning and growth. Participants will engage in coursework to help them define the central characteristics of humility. After the creation of the fundamental components, participants will work alone and with others to generate opportunities to develop the skills and behaviors to enable humble leadership.

Arrogance is an individual characteristic that erodes team continuity, interpersonal relationships, and organizational effectiveness. Humility enhances team cohesiveness and productivity and builds strong trust-based relationships and organizational success. The way leaders engage in their day-to-day activities, particularly how the leader interacts with followers, determines whether the leader is viewed as arrogant or humble. Through this program, you will gain an understanding of four leaders' approaches and how they impact the way followers view and react to being led. The program helps you develop the skills necessary to build leadership behaviors that build leader, team, and organizational effectiveness.

All companies hope to minimize negative outcomes while maximizing positive outcomes. Humility is a positive leadership attribute that enhances positive outcomes while simultaneously minimizes the negative. Humble leadership has benefits that accrue to multiple levels of the organization. Many outcomes have substantial benefits for the leader, peers, and followers. Additionally, positive outcomes accrue to teams and the organization as a whole. The humility program provides an understanding of the benefits and provides individual and team exercises to help savvy and budding leaders become maximally effective. How we engage with and talk to others determines how leaders are perceived. The ability to engage in humble conversations creates the conditions necessary for effectiveness.

The humble conversations module is based primarily on the writing of Edgar Schein (author of Humble Leadership and Humble Inquiry) and forms the foundation to help leaders engage in humble and productive conversations. Leaders need to engage in conversation free from interpretations and assumptions that often destroy the conversations. Humble conversations rest on the belief, that as a leader, I don’t know the answer to everything, what happened, or who is responsible. Humble conversations occur when the leader genuinely doesn’t know the answers and uses an open questioning approach to discover a clear picture of what occurred. Through the humble conversations module, participants will gain insights into the questioning process to help create open and productive dialog. Humility has a profound impact on leadership, team, and organizational effectiveness. The Humble Conversations forms the capstone that brings the Leading with Humility program to life .
