Mentor

Mentoring enables an organization to develop relationships with new employees to help connect the employees and build the necessary skills to be successful. Mentoring occurs when an existing employee, the mentor, builds career-related skills in the new employee required for success and helps the new employee create the relationships to make the new employee feel like a part of the team and organization.

The program enables the mentor to develop the skills and competencies necessary to develop others. Ultimately, an organization’s ability to develop employees determines the success or failure of the firm. Effective mentorship is the first step to becoming an exceptional leader.

The mentoring program covers five essential modules:

The module explains how to build interdependent and mutually beneficial relationships with new employees. Effective mentors provide new employees with career-related support to develop the technical skills necessary for long-term success and the relational support to develop meaningful relationships. Mentors gain critical leadership skills, an additional benefit and skillset that accrues to the mentor.

The second module discusses the importance of developing and maintaining the mentoring relationship. Effective mentoring and leadership rest on building and maintaining sound relationships. Identifying the attributes of functional and dysfunctional mentoring relationships enables the mentor to make in-course adjustments and build the relationships for success.

The ability to interact appropriately with new employees provides the opportunity to build relationships. Emotional intelligence provides participants with the skills necessary to respond appropriately to social interaction and provides a significant dividend when leaders and employees face emotion-laden situations. The module enables participants to understand the behaviors and build the skills to enact emotional intelligence.

The module provides a framework for the participants to identify the needs of new employees. New employees have basic needs that enable them to meet their maximum potential. The module provides mentors and leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the needs and ensure organizational success. Communication involves developing an appreciation for the complexities of effective communication and the necessity of active listening to ensure communication success. The module provides participants with the skills necessary for effective communication.

The ability to provide meaningful and timely feedback often proves problematic. The feedback module identifies feedback's role in developing engaged employees and improving performance. The feedback segment provides practical steps to providing strength and weakness-based feedback to impact essential organizational outcomes. The goal-setting unit provides insights into the importance of setting meaningful goals and the SMART goal-setting process.

The mentoring program provides the skills to develop mentors into leaders and improve the relational skills of current leaders. The ability to mentor and develop new and existing employees is a crucial step to developing a high-performing organization.
